Before you start
US financial-abuse support and account questions. This page has static prompts only: no notes form, saved work, TXT export or print control. It cannot make a device private, determine liability or provide emergency assistance.
1. Choose support before an account task
If there is immediate danger, call 911 when you can do so safely. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers live support at 800-799-7233, by text START to 88788, and through its website. Phone, text and browsing can leave traces; choose a contact method with your safety in mind.
An advocate can help you consider the next step and local services. You do not need a complete account list before seeking help. Ask the service what information it needs and how it handles privacy. It offers referrals rather than direct cash assistance; availability of local housing, legal or financial help must be checked with the provider.
2. Consider what an account change might reveal
NNEDV’s Safety Net project describes how linked financial information and notifications can expose activity. Before changing passwords, contact details, statements, alerts or account access, consider with a specialist whether the change could alert the person causing harm or increase risk.
Do not confront that person, access their private accounts without permission or make covert changes as a step in this checklist. Even a downloaded file or a printout could be found. Private browsing and this page’s leave button do not guarantee privacy. Choosing to stop without making notes is a valid next step.
3. If safe, consider a minimal inventory elsewhere
The prompts below are for thought or a safe external method you choose with support; nothing can be entered here. You may skip every prompt. Generic labels such as Account A or Notice B can be enough for an initial conversation. Do not gather documents if doing so would expose you.
Possible questions are: which accounts do you know about, what role is documented, what notice needs attention and which documents might already be available through lawful access? Do not include passwords, PINs, full account numbers, names, addresses or a safety plan in this page or on a device you cannot trust. A missing document is a question, not a reason to take a risk.
4. Separate safety, debt questions and legal deadlines
An account opened without permission, a disputed charge, a coerced signature and an agreed joint debt may require different processes. Do not assume all are legally identical or that abuse automatically cancels a balance. CFPB guidance distinguishes authorized users from joint borrowers and notes that contract and state law matter.
When safe, ask a specialist and a local lawyer how to approach the creditor and what correspondence a request may generate. The CFPB legal-help directory provides state routes; ask about eligibility, costs and capacity. Tell the adviser promptly about court papers. Seeking help or negotiating does not itself suspend a court deadline.
Fictional example: two records, no automatic liability conclusion
A person knows of Card A with a $700 statement and Loan B with a $1,300 notice. The two listed balances total $2,000, but the person’s legal responsibility is unconfirmed. A trusted specialist helps them choose whether and where to discuss those records; nothing is entered or downloaded from this page.
The first question is whether each record describes authorized use, joint borrowing or something disputed. The example does not instruct the person to obtain more records, contact the other account holder or change access. A safe next step may be a conversation without any document collection.
Before you finish
- Consider device and contact safety first.
- Seek specialist support without needing a complete inventory.
- Review notification risks before making account changes.
- Use optional external prompts only if safe.
- Ask local help about disputed debt and court papers.
Optional questions to consider only if safe
This page has no note fields, download or worksheet-print button. Only make an inventory if a specialist safety plan and your circumstances make it safe.
- What support channel could I use without increasing risk?
- Which generic account labels might be useful to discuss?
- Which role is documented or still unknown?
- Is there a notice needing prompt legal attention?
- What lawful, already available document could an adviser review?
Nothing typed is needed here. Choose a safe way to contact a specialist; ordinary browser printing and history still exist.
Questions you may have
Does the leave button erase this visit?
No. It changes the page displayed; it does not erase browser history, network logs, downloads or monitoring. It cannot make a shared device safe.
Can I complete or export notes here?
No. This page contains static prompts and offers no notes form, TXT export or print control. If recording anything would increase risk, skip it; discuss a safer option with a specialist.
