Form 1099-C: Check Canceled Debt Before You File

Debt and tax documents

Your 1099-C looks wrong: prepare a correction record

Identify the exact field that appears wrong and ask the creditor to explain or correct it. Keep the original, your supporting records and every response; a correction request does not remove the need to report the correct taxable amount.

First step. Place the 1099-C beside the final agreement and payment history, then mark the specific amount, date or other field you need explained.

Before you start

US federal individual canceled-debt tax records. Sources checked September 15, 2026 include Publication 4681 for tax year 2025 and April 2025 issuer instructions, not final 2026 return instructions. Check updates for your tax year; state treatment is separate.

1. Record which part is disputed

Compare the form’s tax year and box 1 event date with your records. Check box 2 canceled amount, box 3 interest included in box 2, debt description, personal-liability indicator and event code as relevant. Do not put tax IDs or full account numbers in these notes. Use Form A and Agreement B. A form received this year can concern an earlier tax year.

2. Reconcile the agreement and payments

Gather the original balance breakdown, signed settlement, payment receipts and final creditor statement. Distinguish an agreed cancellation from a payment not yet completed or an unresolved collection claim. Identify whether the form includes interest or other amounts absent from your simple subtraction. IRS instructions say box 3 interest is included in box 2, not an additional amount to add again. Ask about unexplained components before declaring your calculation the taxable answer.

3. Ask the issuer for an explanation or corrected form

Use the creditor’s verified contact channel and request the department responsible for 1099-C reporting. State the field, the conflicting document and the correction or explanation sought. Retain the request date and reply reference. Keep both original and corrected versions and ask which form the correction replaces. Do not edit the original tax form yourself and present it as an issuer correction.

4. Resolve the filing question separately

IRS Topic 431 says the responsibility is to report the correct taxable canceled-debt amount despite form errors. Ask a preparer what evidence and filing action are needed if the correction remains pending or you already filed. Receiving 1099-C does not conclusively prove collection has ended; continued demands need clarification. Exclusions and any Form 982 requirements are separate from correcting the issuer’s data. This page does not determine an exclusion or postpone a filing deadline.

Fictional example: check the documents

A fictional agreement identifies $8,000 personal-loan principal, accepts a completed $3,000 payment and confirms cancellation of the remaining $5,000, with no interest or fees involved. Form A instead reports $6,000 in box 2. The document difference is $1,000.

The request identifies the agreement and receipt and asks the issuer to reconcile $6,000 against $8,000 − $3,000 = $5,000. The preparer receives all versions. The $5,000 is the documented canceled principal in this example, not a calculated tax bill or a finding that all of it is taxable.

My preparation notes

All notes are optional. Use labels such as Debt A and Document B. Keep identifying records, account numbers and tax IDs outside this page.

Entries are optional and stay in this page's memory. This worksheet does not send or save them. Use generic account labels and document labels. Do not enter account numbers, Social Security numbers, PINs, access codes, passwords, names or addresses, and do not upload documents. Downloading or printing creates a copy you control.

Keep all versions together and ask the preparer to resolve reporting before relying on a corrected figure.

Put up to four documents or actions in order

Record a short fact, such as requested a quote, sent a question, or received written terms. Dates and document labels are optional. Use generic labels; keep actual documents and identifying details outside this tool.

This is a factual log. Dated events sort from oldest to newest. Events on the same date keep their entry order because times are unknown. Undated events appear separately, in entry order. A document reference is your own label, not proof that a record was verified.

Enter actual dates as YYYY-MM-DD. If a date is unknown, leave it blank; do not invent one. Dates are calendar dates, with no time zone or time-of-day comparison. This record does not calculate a legal deadline or schedule reminders.

Questions you may have

Can I ignore a form I think is wrong?

Keep it and address the discrepancy. The correct reporting amount must be determined from the facts and applicable tax rules.

Should I add box 3 to box 2?

No. When reported there, box 3 identifies interest already included in box 2. Ask the preparer about that interest’s tax treatment.
