Before you start
For personal consumer debts connected with this state. This guide organizes records and official navigation; it does not decide liability, exemptions, limitation periods or response deadlines. Federal, tribal and specialized proceedings may need different help.
1. Match the complaint to the defendant’s forms
The Magistrate Court directory lists commercial-creditor complaint SCA-M208, Answer SCA-M225 and defendant information sheet SCA-MI-401NP. The information sheet distinguishes confessing judgment from other response choices. Read it before signing; a request to discuss payments should not be confused with agreeing to a court judgment. WV courts: magistrate civil forms.
A demand letter asks you to pay; a summons or court notice requires attention to the court process. Read every page and keep the envelope. Verify the court through its official directory and ask about the document, filing method and hearing instructions. Do not wait for a collector to explain the court’s requirements.
2. Choose one AG complaint submission route
The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection page offers mail, PDF email and online complaint routes. Include the history, supporting copies and requested resolution. Its process describes voluntary mediation and possible follow-up. Keep a copy of the exact submission and any request for additional documents. WV Attorney General: consumer complaint routes.
Describe the conduct, disputed amount, supporting documents and requested correction. Use copies and keep originals. A regulator’s complaint receipt is not an Answer filed in court. Complaining, requesting records or negotiating does not stop a court deadline; keep those tasks moving separately.
3. Use the State Bar’s legal-aid application contact
The West Virginia State Bar’s legal-aid directory gives 866-255-4370 for applications for attorney or advocate assistance. Use the intake contact to confirm eligibility, case priorities and help available. The directory’s private-lawyer referral is a separate service; ask about fees and scope before arranging that consultation. WV State Bar: legal-aid applications and referrals.
Tell intake about any summons, judgment or hearing immediately. Ask whether available help covers advice, document review or representation, and what you must still do yourself. An application or referral does not mean a lawyer has accepted your case.
4. Distinguish creditor payments and court costs
If the packet includes both a creditor’s demand and court costs, identify the source and recipient of each amount. Keep receipts tied to the amount they were intended to cover. Ask for written confirmation of application; a creditor payment receipt alone does not establish that every court-related obligation or docket entry was resolved.
Use generic document labels in these optional notes. Save identifying records separately. An English official form remains an official form in its required filing language; the translated explanations and personal notes here are not court submissions. Confirm signature, service and filing requirements directly.
Fictional document example
A fictional West Virginia packet lists $600 claimed debt and $40 court costs, totaling $640. Receipt A records $100 paid to the creditor. The reader asks whether the debt ledger now shows $500 and separately verifies the $40 cost record, instead of assuming one receipt settles both.
These figures illustrate a records question, not a finding of what is legally owed. Keep dated events in order, mark missing dates as unknown, and carry the unresolved issue to the appropriate court or adviser without waiting for the complaint process.

Keep the original evidence elsewhere and verify the next action through the official contact. The record does not send or file anything.
Put up to four documents or actions in order
Record a short fact, such as requested a quote, sent a question, or received written terms. Dates and document labels are optional. Use generic labels; keep actual documents and identifying details outside this tool.
This is a factual log. Dated events sort from oldest to newest. Events on the same date keep their entry order because times are unknown. Undated events appear separately, in entry order. A document reference is your own label, not proof that a record was verified.
Enter actual dates as YYYY-MM-DD. If a date is unknown, leave it blank; do not invent one. Dates are calendar dates, with no time zone or time-of-day comparison. This record does not calculate a legal deadline or schedule reminders.
Questions you may have
Does a complaint or payment discussion protect my court deadline?
No. Confirm the required response with the court’s instructions and legal help. Keep following the case unless a valid court order or applicable procedure changes what is required.
Can these translated notes be sent as my court response?
No. They help organize questions. Use the appropriate official documents and filing instructions; ask about language assistance, fee relief and help completing forms.
