Compare help and next steps

Check your DMP’s first month: did each creditor receive payment?

Compare three records: your payment to the agency, the agency’s distribution statement and each creditor’s posted payment. A debit from your bank does not prove the creditor received the funds.

First step. Request the first distribution statement and the matching creditor statements, using the same payment cycle.

Before you start

US consumer DMP payment records. This reconciliation does not determine legal liability for a late payment or confirm how a credit bureau should report an account.

1. Collect the three sides of the transfer

Keep your bank’s completed-payment receipt, the agency’s receipt and distribution list, and creditor statements or transaction histories. Mark dates as sent, received or posted rather than treating them as identical. Include a returned transfer or held amount. Use generic document references in the notes; keep bank and account details privately. Start with one creditor if several records are still missing.

2. Explain every dollar sent to the agency

Separate the disclosed agency charge from creditor allocations. The allocations plus the charge plus any amount still held should reconcile to the received transfer, after any documented opening balance or adjustment. Do not call a held amount a creditor payment. Ask the agency to explain an unfamiliar deduction and the contract basis for it. A fee quote alone does not establish that collecting the fee at that time was lawful.

3. Confirm postings and accepted terms

For every participating creditor, match the distributed amount to the posted amount and date. Then compare the statement’s interest rate, fee treatment and required payment with the accepted DMP terms and their effective date. A first statement may cover periods on both sides of the change; request an explanation rather than assuming a mismatch is correct or wrong. Creditor acceptance and actual receipt are separate checks.

4. Keep the discrepancy open until resolved

Send the specific mismatch to the agency and creditor through verified channels. Ask where the money is, whether another action is required and how any resulting charge will be reviewed. Keep the reply and later corrected statement. Do not send a duplicate payment solely because one screen is blank without clarifying the missing transfer and current obligation. If the issue affects credit reporting, use the separate report-dispute process and keep its evidence.

Fictional example: check the documents

A fictional agency receives $425 on September 4. Its statement identifies a $25 agency charge, $240 for Creditor A and $160 for Creditor B: $25 + $240 + $160 = $425. Creditor A posts $240; Creditor B’s current record shows $0.

The unexplained creditor amount is $160, not $185 and not the full $425. The reader asks for the transfer reference and receipt date for B, then records the response and a later posting if confirmed. This reconciles cash movement; it does not promise fee removal or assume the $400 reduced principal by $400.

My preparation notes

All notes are optional. Use labels such as Debt A and Document B. Keep identifying records, account numbers and tax IDs outside this page.

Entries are optional and stay in this page's memory. This worksheet does not send or save them. Use generic account labels and document labels. Do not enter account numbers, Social Security numbers, PINs, access codes, passwords, names or addresses, and do not upload documents. Downloading or printing creates a copy you control.

Close each discrepancy only after the relevant record confirms the outcome.

Put up to four documents or actions in order

Record a short fact, such as requested a quote, sent a question, or received written terms. Dates and document labels are optional. Use generic labels; keep actual documents and identifying details outside this tool.

This is a factual log. Dated events sort from oldest to newest. Events on the same date keep their entry order because times are unknown. Undated events appear separately, in entry order. A document reference is your own label, not proof that a record was verified.

Enter actual dates as YYYY-MM-DD. If a date is unknown, leave it blank; do not invent one. Dates are calendar dates, with no time zone or time-of-day comparison. This record does not calculate a legal deadline or schedule reminders.

Questions you may have

Is an agency receipt enough?

It confirms one part of the transfer. Keep checking the distribution record and creditor receipt before marking that creditor paid.

Should my balance fall by the entire allocation?

Not necessarily. Interest, fees and the creditor’s allocation affect principal. Reconcile payment receipt first, then request an explanation of the balance change.
