Before you start
Consumer collection help in Delaware. Procedures depend on the document, court and facts. This page does not determine whether a debt is enforceable, a company needs a license, income is protected or a filing is timely. A complaint or negotiation does not pause court requirements.
1. Open Delaware’s consumer complaint route
The Department of Justice provides an online Consumer Complaint Statement and assistance if you cannot complete it. Its Consumer Mediation Unit helps with business disputes through an informal process. Describe the conduct, supporting records and requested correction. Do not assume that every disagreement over a contract is consumer fraud or that mediation will resolve a filed lawsuit.
Use copies of the demand, relevant payment evidence and your earlier written request. Identify the original creditor and the current collecting company separately. State the correction you want and keep the submission confirmation. A regulator’s acknowledgment does not establish that the balance is wrong or that the company violated a law.
2. Read the Justice of the Peace response choices
The court’s JP civil response guide explains J.P. Civ. Form 7 for debt and trespass actions. The choices include admitting the claim without a trial or requesting a trial; debt actions also have a Bill of Particulars option for more detail about the claim. Other action types follow different instructions. Read your enclosed form and ask for help before choosing an admission.
A collection demand is different from a summons or complaint filed in court. Verify the court through an independently located official directory. Read every enclosed instruction and confirm any response date with the court or qualified legal help. Ask about filing, service, fees or fee relief and proof of receipt; do not assume an email counts as filing. Official forms may remain in English; these personal notes are not translated court filings.
3. Use Delaware Legal Help Link for referral
Delaware Legal Help Link asks about your legal problem and directs you to information or civil legal providers. It is a referral and information route, not an assurance that a lawyer will take the case. Ask the receiving provider about income screening, case priorities and the scope of help. The portal does not offer referrals for criminal, traffic or personal injury cases.
Tell intake staff promptly about a hearing, response notice or existing judgment, using the date shown on the actual document. Applying does not mean a lawyer has accepted the case. Ask when and how you should follow up and what you must handle yourself while the application is reviewed.
4. Ask what a bill of particulars would address
A Bill of Particulars request concerns details of the debt claim; it is not the same as a consumer complaint or a payment-plan request. Confirm with the issuing JP court and legal help how the request must be made and what further response is required in your case. Do not infer that requesting information automatically extends another obligation or court date.
Use the notes below for document labels, contact routes and unresolved questions. They do not send a complaint, file a court response or calculate a legal deadline. Keep source documents privately elsewhere. Avoid Social Security numbers, full account numbers, banking credentials, addresses and other identifying details in this worksheet.
Fictional Delaware example: detail request versus admission
Sam receives JP debt papers claiming $1,500, but the attached account description does not explain a $150 charge. Sam reads the Form 7 options and asks legal help about requesting a Bill of Particulars. Sam does not select an admission merely to ask whether monthly payments would be possible.
Sam separately saves the demand and payment records for a Consumer Mediation Unit complaint about the unexplained charge. Sam uses Delaware Legal Help Link to seek a civil referral and checks the court’s actual instructions. A request for $150 of detail is not a decision that $1,350 is the legally correct balance.

My Delaware collection help record
Optional personal notes. Use labels such as Letter A or Receipt B; keep identifying documents outside this page.
Entries are optional and stay in this page's memory. This worksheet does not send or save them. Use generic account labels and document labels. Do not enter account numbers, Social Security numbers, PINs, access codes, passwords, names or addresses, and do not upload documents. Downloading or printing creates a copy you control.
Confirm the next action with the responsible office and keep its actual instructions with your private records.
Put up to four documents or actions in order
Record a short fact, such as requested a quote, sent a question, or received written terms. Dates and document labels are optional. Use generic labels; keep actual documents and identifying details outside this tool.
This is a factual log. Dated events sort from oldest to newest. Events on the same date keep their entry order because times are unknown. Undated events appear separately, in entry order. A document reference is your own label, not proof that a record was verified.
Enter actual dates as YYYY-MM-DD. If a date is unknown, leave it blank; do not invent one. Dates are calendar dates, with no time zone or time-of-day comparison. This record does not calculate a legal deadline or schedule reminders.
Questions you may have
Does a complaint confirmation mean I have answered a lawsuit?
No. A state consumer complaint and a court response serve different purposes. Follow the instructions for the actual court case, even while a complaint, payment discussion or legal-aid application is pending.
Can this page tell me the last date to respond or whether the debt is too old?
No. Those questions depend on the papers, service, court procedure and other facts. Bring the complete documents to qualified legal help. Record the source of any date you are given instead of calculating a deadline here.
